UCL Delegation Holds Talks with Tsinghua University's School of Healthcare Management

On January 21, a delegation led by Professor John Hurst, Pro-Vice-Provost of University College London (UCL), visited Tsinghua Medicine. The delegation held in-depth discussions with faculty representatives from the School of Healthcare Management on topics such as the development of academic disciplines, talent cultivation, research and innovation, and international collaboration. The meeting was chaired by Professor Ji Jiakui, Assistant Dean of Tsinghua Medicine, and attended by Professor Wu Jian, Dean of the School of Healthcare Management, along with faculty representatives Li Jiayi, Jiang Nan, Wu You, Hu Jiaqi, and Zhang Zeyu.

Opening the meeting, Dean Wu Jian delivered a welcoming address on behalf of the School of Healthcare Management, warmly welcoming Professor Hurst and his delegation and emphasizing the School’s strong commitment to strategic international cooperation. He commended UCL for its profound legacy in medicine and life sciences, as well as its strong global outlook and capacity for interdisciplinary integration. He noted that UCL’s development philosophy closely aligns with the School’s strategic positioning, and expressed hope that the exchange would lay the foundation for a long-term, sustainable partnership, enabling both institutions to draw on each other’s complementary strengths, foster collaborative innovation, and advance high-quality development of healthcare management as an academic discipline.

Following the welcoming address, Associate Professor Li Jiayi provided an overview of the School’s development, talent cultivation system, core research areas, and progress in international collaboration. She also introduced the School’s a three-tier framework for structuring academic disciplines at the micro, meso, and macro levels, which aims to train versatile healthcare management professionals with interdisciplinary knowledge, practical skills, and a global outlook. Guided by the philosophy of “striving for high aspirations while staying grounded in real-world needs,” the School of Healthcare Management aligns its research with national strategic priorities such as population aging, the use of AI in healthcare, and optimization of health insurance policies. It has produced a series of high-impact research outcomes that provide strong support for industry development and policy formulation.

During the discussion, Professor John Hurst commended the School of Healthcare Management for its educational philosophy, academic portfolio, and research achievements. Drawing on UCL’s extensive experience in medical research and talent development, he provided a systematic overview of the development and global strategy of the UCL Global Business School for Health. He emphasized the strong potential for collaboration between the two institutions in areas such as digital health and health economics, and expressed UCL’s willingness to pursue deeper, multi-faceted partnerships with the School of Healthcare Management. The two sides held in-depth discussions on the specifics of collaboration, including collaborative research projects, joint educational programs, and exchange programs for faculty and students.

The meeting provided an effective platform for in-depth dialogue, helping to establish a clear direction for future cooperation. Moving forward, the School of Healthcare Management will continue to expand its international network of partnerships by collaborating with world-leading universities and institutions. With interdisciplinary innovation as its driving force and talent cultivation as its core mission, the School is committed to supporting the vision of a global community of health for all.
